Waterford Institute of Technology highly commended at THE Awards 2021
The Times Higher Education Awards have been recognising outstanding achievements in UK higher education, and now Irish education, for the best part of two decades, but never before have they shone a light on the level of effort and creativity that was demanded of 3rd level education throughout the 2019-20 academic year.
The response required, and delivered, in the face of a global pandemic was unique, and many of the awards submissions reflected those unprecedented circumstances.
WIT was highly commended in the “Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year” category.
WIT received the recognition for the efforts of the Calmast STEM Engagement Centre in organizing Maths Week Ireland, which takes place every October across the 32 counties.
WIT President Professor Willie Donnelly said:
“We are delighted and extremely proud to be acknowledged in the Times Higher Awards. That our commendation is in the area of outreach and widening participation is especially pleasing. The nomination recognises the excellence of our outreach activity through the work of Calmast which has been promoting STEM for many years locally, regionally and nationally.”
THE Awards are commonly referred to as the “Oscars of Higher Education” due to the high level of prestige they carry.
