Carlow
Clashganny Looped Walk – A nice walk on forest roads and along the Barrow Way with magnificent views of Clashganny Lock and the River Barrow. Clashganny Looped walk is through an old wood which has had forestry cover present since sometime in the 1800s. The Clashganny Lock Loop is 3.5km long and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete. The Clashganny Forest Looped Walk covers a distance of 6km which takes around two hours to complete.
The Barrow Way – originally a patch alongside the River Barrow where horses pulled barges and goods for transport. These days, walkers can enjoy excellent flat walking, passing good land where tillage and cattle farming is predominant. The path offers much of architectural interest to the visitor. The full length of the Barrow Way from Robertstown to St. Mullins is 113km.
Kilkenny
Jenkinstown Wood Loop – Once part of a large estate. Today, the old house is long gone but remnants of 1870s parkland have survived, including rare Chinese Necklace Poplars. The facilities here also include a picnic site, forest walks, deer park and a craft centre. There are many species of birds living in this wood including the raven and long-eared owl.
Brandon Hill – Beginning in the town of Graiguenamanagh, this 12 km trail is perfect for experienced walkers looking for something a little bit more challenging. This trail crosses minor roadways, forestry tracks and hillside paths with stunning views once you reach the peak. It is definitely suited more towards people with walking experience as it is challenging.
Tipperary
The Glen of Aherlow – This is a valley where the River Aherlow runs between the Galtee Mountains and the wooded ridge of Slievenamuck. This loop traces along woodland trails and forestry tracks through Aherlow Nature Park and Ballinacourty Woods. It’s around 6km and you are sure to see beautiful views of the Galtee Mountains.
Slí Eala Linear Walk – A 10km linear walk that takes you from the historic village of Dromineer to Scotts Bridge all along the Nenagh River. You can either start this walk in the centre of Dromineer village or at Scotts Bridge, which is approximately 2.5km from the centre of Nenagh. You can expect to see all kinds of wildlife including Ireland’s largest indigenous bird, the mute swan. You will also pass through farms so you should also see cows, horses and sheep.
Waterford
Ardmore Cliff Walk – Wrapped around a long sandy beach the picturesque village of Ardmore is steeped in history. It is one of the oldest Christian settlements in Ireland. On your walk keep an eye out for wonderful archaeology, coastal birdlife and the ‘Samson’ shipwreck.
Waterford Greenway – The old railway line from Waterford City to Dungarvan is an impressive 46km off-road cycling and walking trail which travels through nature across eleven bridges, three amazing viaducts and a huge tunnel all the way from the River Suir to Dungarvan Bay.
Wexford
The Cullentra Trail – A looped 7.63km trail which begins and finishes in the centre of the village of Kiltealy. Follow the red waymarked posts from here out along the trail to enjoy sweeping views out over County Wexford, all the way to the coast. It takes around 2 hours and then you should be back in the village.
Forest of Dunbrody Trail – This walk is 1.75km in total. It will take you through the Forest of the Dunbrody, where Coillte in partnership with the JFK Trust planted some 25,000 trees comprising of ash, oak, larch and douglas fir, to replace the trees used in building the ‘Dunbrody Famine Ship’. The forest is a perfect habitat for abundant flora and fauna to thrive as the seasons unfold and you may spot woodpeckers, blue jays, pheasants, long-eared owls and red squirrels. There’s a fairy village located beside the woodland path.
