Waterford’s Tammy Darcy wins Humanitarian Of The Year Award!

Tammy Darcy, founder of The Shona Project, has been named the Irish Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year.

The Irish Red Cross bestows the prestigious Humanitarian of the Year Award on an individual for exceptional humanitarian achievement.

Tammy who is from Passage East has dedicated her life to assisting teenage girls in recognizing their rightful place in the world through her non-profit organization The Shona Project.

The Shona Project will have directly worked with over 20,000 girls in schools across Ireland by the end of this year, with over 40,000 girls attending their Shine Festival in 2020.

Chair of the Irish Red Cross Pat Carey said:

“The Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards are the highest honour given by the Irish Red Cross, in recognition of those who are dedicated to exceptional humanitarian excellence.”

“Tammy Darcy has not only demonstrated extraordinary leadership through The Shona Project, but she has demonstrated a measurable and far-reaching positive difference in the lives of others,” said Carey, as she accepted her award.

“Tammy is driven by a vision to help teenage girls realise their rightful place in the world and, with this vision, she has inspired others to make this societal change a reality in schools across Ireland, in India and Africa.”

Speaking at the award announcement on Sunday, Tammy Darcy said:

“I’m so honoured to accept this award, and am in awe of the amazing work of the other finalists. This organisation was inspired by the illness of my sister Shona, and being able to share her story with almost 20,000 young women all over Ireland has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Watching the organisation go from strength to strength, and become a movement of women and girls supporting each other, and being kind to themselves shows that we all identify on some level, and that The Shona Project, is no longer just about Shona, but about all of us.”

The Shona Project also took the honours in the Innovation for Change category, recognising those who have implemented an innovative, positive solution in response to a humanitarian issue.

Waterford Institute of Technology highly commended at THE Awards 2021

The Times Higher Education Awards have been recognising outstanding achievements in UK higher education, and now Irish education, for the best part of two decades, but never before have they shone a light on the level of effort and creativity that was demanded of 3rd level education throughout the 2019-20 academic year.

The response required, and delivered, in the face of a global pandemic was unique, and many of the awards submissions reflected those unprecedented circumstances.

WIT was highly commended in the “Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year” category.

WIT received the recognition for the efforts of the Calmast STEM Engagement Centre in organizing Maths Week Ireland, which takes place every October across the 32 counties.

WIT President Professor Willie Donnelly said:

“We are delighted and extremely proud to be acknowledged in the Times Higher Awards. That our commendation is in the area of outreach and widening participation is especially pleasing. The nomination recognises the excellence of our outreach activity through the work of Calmast which has been promoting STEM for many years locally, regionally and nationally.”

THE Awards are commonly referred to as the “Oscars of Higher Education” due to the high level of prestige they carry.
