“Cosy & cheerful” Tipperary named one of the world’s best holiday destinations for 2022 by Condé Nast!
There is much to enjoy in this cosy, characterful county, from local artisans and family-run woollen mills, to craft distilleries and ancient cave formations.
Condé Nast wrote: “Country Tipperary has long held an appeal for history buffs due to the atmospheric Rock of Cashel landmark – the most spectacular cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland – but it has rarely been more than a half-day bullet point as part of a longer itinerary. But 2022 should see guests pump the breaks, as there is much more to enjoy in this cosy, characterful county, from local artisans and family-run woollen mills, to craft distilleries and ancient cave formations.
In spring, Relais & Chateaux will open its newest property in Cashel. An artful renovation of a grand 18th-century house once home to Ireland’s archbishops, Cashel Palace will offer 42 smart rooms and suites, a promising spa and a restaurant focusing on hyper-local, seasonal dishes. A cornucopia of goodies can also be gobbled up on Tipperary Food Tours, which take in honey farms – showcasing the importance of protecting the tiny but impactful Irish black bee – and trad cheesemakers where you can indulge in an unfathomably creamy wedge of Cashel Blue.” Book me in now!
There is so much to do in Tipperary for a visit full of excitement & activity….. to a more relaxing visit!
So, what are some things to do in Tipperary?
Visit Cahir Castle
Cahir Castle, built to be a prime defensive location, is an imposing structure that appears to grow out of the rock on which it stands. Explore the castle, which has been captured three times in its history, and put yourself in the middle of centuries of sieges and bombardments. The last Lord of Cahir died in 1961, and the estate was handed over to the state. It still has its impressive keep, tower, and a large portion of its original defensive structure.
Go for a spin along The Vee
The Vee runs from Clogheen to Lismore, passing through mountains, flora, fauna, and waterfalls. Along the way, consider stopping at Mahon Falls and going for a stroll! ‘The Vee’ is your photo opportunity, offering fantastic views all the way to Cashel on a clear day.
Visit the Mitchelstown Caves
Mitchelstown Caves was discovered accidentally in 1833, by Michael Condon who was quarrying limestone when he dropped his crowbar into a crevice. He stooped down to pull out a few boulders to retrieve the bar, next minute he found himself looking down into a vast series of underground chambers, passages and caverns. It is now one of Europe’s major showcaves and well worth a visit!
Explore beautiful Lough Derg and its amazing shoreline!
With 50km of Lough Derg shoreline, activities on land and water include cruising, canoeing, kayaking, SUP, and hiking all the way along Lough Derg. Rent a bike and go exploring. Rent a sailing boat, or leave it to the professionals, and sit back and relax.!
When you are finished exploring Tipperary, make sure you discover the rest of Ireland South East!
