Ireland’s largest sustainable energy project on course for its start date in Tipperary
Ireland’s largest sustainable energy project (Silvermines Hydro – €650m) is on course for its 2023 planning application.
Silvermines Hydro, which will be built just outside Silvermines village in Tipperary, will use storage-based technology to generate electricity.
Water from a higher elevation reservoir will be released into a lower reservoir, where it will flow through massive turbines and generate electricity at peak demand.
During the night or during periods of low electricity demand, water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir.
The lower reservoir is already present at the site, thanks to an open-cast mine that has been flooded to a depth of about 70 meters at the foot of the Silvermines Mountains.
The project’s cost-benefit analysis revealed significant societal benefits for Tipperary and Ireland.
This will transform a mining wasteland and protect the local environment, while creating sustainable economic and environmental benefits for the local community and the wider region.
In addition to the national social and environmental benefits, over the life of the plant the economic value will exceed €2.5 billion. The project investment and operation will also stimulate local job creation in Ireland South East.
