Ireland South East Innovative Companies Series: MicroGen Biotech
Every week the Ireland South East Development Office will profile one of our most innovative companies. This week it’s MicroGen Biotech based in IT Carlow.
Who are they?
MicroGen Biotech was founded in 2012 by Dr Xuemie Germaine. It is located in The Enterprise and Research Incubation Centre, IT Carlow. There are currently 9 employees working in Ireland and 5 in China. The team aim to deliver microbes to help create safer, sustainable food.
What do they do?
The team at MicroGen Biotech develop biologicals to increase crop yield, prevent heavy metal in crops, and degrade organic pollutant in soil.
Germaine said:
“Human health is damaged by highly carcinogenic heavy metals such as arsenic, which are in everyday foods including potatoes, rice, wheat and vegetables. Our technology can significantly reduce these toxins, and can restore the 3 billion acres of land that are polluted with heavy metals today.”
What makes them innovative?
MicroGen Biotech is the only company in the world that develop these patented biologicals. They apply proprietary Constructed Functional Microbiome platform technology to develop microbial products to block the uptake of heavy metals by crops to protect food safety, restore soil natural microbiome to increase soil health, crop quality and yields and break down toxic pollutants to remediate contaminated soil. Healthy soil, healthy people, healthy farmer is their message.
What’s next for them?
The company has successfully registered two of its solutions with the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, they are now working with partners to start using the solutions there. They raised €3.47m in 2020, bringing their total funding to €7.8m, and plan to use the latest round of funding to expand their production and invest in new technology.
Germain stated:
“We are now in a position to scale by strengthening our senior management team, closing contracts in our sales funnel, expanding production capacity and investing in technology innovation and product development.”
MicroGen Biotech see Europe and North America as key growth markets and are currently in talks with several growers and global food brands.
MicroGen Biotech won two awards at world’s largest start up competition – Samsung Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC). The awards were the Agtech & Food category and the Female Founder Award.
